So you justify buying an expensive candle by telling yourself you'll reuse the jar after the candle is gone, only to find you're left with a waxy mess. We hear your voice. However, you can turn that waxed container into everything from a vase to a trinket. Learn how to take wax out of candle jars -- no matter their shape or size -- and give those containers new life. You don't need any special equipment or a lot of time -- just a kitchen and some patience. Read on to learn how to get wax out of a glass candle jar once and for all.
1. Freeze the Candle Wax
Cold causes wax to harden and shrink, making it easier to remove, hence the old trick of using ice cubes to remove wax from carpets. If the jar has a narrow mouth, use a butter knife (or a spoon if your wax is soft) to break up any large chunks of wax remaining in the container. Place the candle in the refrigerator for a few hours or until it is frozen. The wax should pop out of the container immediately, but you can also loosen it with a butter knife if necessary. Scrape off any residue, then clean the container with soap and water.
2. Use Boiling Water
Hot water can also be used to remove wax. Place the candle on a surface protected by a towel or newspaper. Use a butter knife or spoon to remove as much wax as possible. Pour the boiling water into the container, leaving space at the top. (If your candle is made with a soft wax, such as soy wax, you can use hot water that isn't boiling.) Boiling water will melt the wax and it will float to the top. Let the water cool and remove the wax. Filter the water to remove any small wax crumbs. (Do not pour wax down the drain.) Scrape off any remaining wax and clean with soap and water.
3. Use the Oven
This works well if you are cleaning multiple containers at the same time. Use a butter knife or spoon to scrape off as much wax as possible. Heat oven to 180 degrees and line rimmed baking sheet with tin foil or one or two layers of parchment paper. Place the candle upside down on the pan and place the pan in the oven. The wax will melt in about 15 minutes. Remove from the pan and place on a heat-resistant surface. Hold the container with a towel or pot holder, then wipe the inside with a paper towel. Let the container cool, then wash with soap and water.
4. Create a Double Boiler
Use a butter knife or spoon to remove as much wax as possible. Place candles in a pot or large metal bowl on a heat-resistant surface. (You can place a folded rag under the candle to keep it from moving in the pan.) Pour boiling water into the pot around the candle, making sure it doesn't get into the candle jar. Place the jar in hot water until the wax softens. Hold the jar in one hand and loosen the wax with a butter knife. Remove the container from the water, remove the wax, and then wash it with soap and water.
