A drop of olive oil is the beginning and the end of countless classic recipes. Its variable taste and superb nutritional content make it a good reason to pour it on pasta, fish, salads, bread, cake batter, and pizzas, straight into your mouth......
Given how often we use olive oil, it makes sense that many home cooks keep olive oil bottles close to the stove, within easy reach. But this is one of the biggest mistakes you make in maintaining the freshness of your favorite ingredients. Olive oil deteriorates and rages faster when exposed to light, heat, and air, so storing it next to a hot stove (and under a bright overhead light) is the worst place to do it. Here are some tips for storing olive oil.
Choose The Right Olive Oil Containers
At the grocery store, reach for the bottles behind the shelves, where the oil is obscured by the fluorescent lights. Be sure to buy brands that bottle in dark glass to help prevent UV rays from penetrating the bottle. (If you buy oil from clear glass, wrap the bottle in aluminum foil and cover it well when you get home). Long-term exposure to light can also affect flavor, so store olive oil in a dark cabinet or cabinet to prevent oxidation.
Olive oil bottles with spouts are the best choice. It makes it much easier to pour olive oil into the pan. The amount of air entering through the small opening of the spout is no worse than the amount of air entering every time you open an olive oil glass bottle. You can get a spouted bottle with a cover on it for more air protection.
Keep the bottle closed
It's easy to leave an unopened bottle of olive oil for a while until it cooks. But leaving the bottle open -- or even unfastened -- allows air to easily get into the oil, speeding up the oxidation process and, therefore, possibly causing the oil to turn sour. Keep your bottle closed at all times for optimal freshness.
Keep it cool, but not in the fridge
Olive oil exposed to warm temperatures will begin to oxidize and eventually become rancidity. The cooking oil glass bottle should be kept away from heat, but not stored in a cold place, which will cause oils to solidify.
Avoid buying in bulk
Olive oil is not an item to buy in bulk unless it will be consumed quickly. Because there are so many factors that affect oxidation, a bottle of oil can go bad before it is used up. It should be consumed one bottle at a time and purchased as needed to ensure the freshest oil.
